Naomi Parker Fraley, the face for the iconic Rosie the Riveter poster during WWII, died Saturday January 20. She was 96 years old.
Poster designer J. Howard Miller was inspired by a photo of a young Naomi wearing a polka-dot bandana. The poster was originally published in 1943.
Naomi said in a 2016 interview that she was happy that her image still inspired women.
“The Women of this country these days need some icons,” she said.
Rosie the Riveter was symbolic of a nation of women going to work during wartime, while the men were fighting overseas. It kickstarted what would become the Equal Pay for Equal Work movement, and added large numbers of women to the union rolls.
